Air Asia’s recent year end holiday promotion offers plenty of savings for potential holiday goers this year end. Although the advertised travel period isn’t actually at year’s end (the travel period stated is from 4 September 2012 – 26 October 2012, for some reason AirAsia thinks that October is the end of the year), we have found that it is still possible to obtain these promotional rates all the way up to December!
These prices (even the promotional price) are influenced greatly by a couple of factors such as the number of flights available that day (the more, the cheaper) and the period (peak of off-peak). Also, the promotional prices start rising as more people purchase tickets, with a set number of tickets available at promotional tier levels.
However, if you can book early enough and are willing to be flexible with your travelling time, a lot of money can be saved if you are able to book a flight on a day with a promotional fare.
Example 1: Return Journey to Perth, Australia
A one-way flight that would normally cost RM669.00 (all-in, including taxes and fees) to Perth, Australia, can be obtained for as cheap as RM369.00 (45% discount), other one-way promotional tier levels are available at RM499.00 (25% discount) and RM 579.00 (13.5% discount). However, be aware that return tickets generally do not enjoy the same promotional discount as the one-way flights do and can cost anywhere from RM547.00 to RM1,187.00 depending on the date.
Like most holiday goers we would assume that you would want to eventually return from your destination, thus our main concern would be the overall cost of the entire entire trip (including the return flight). We’ve found that it is very possible to book a flight ticket to Perth for RM369.00 and then obtain a corresponding return ticket for RM547.00 which brings your total expenditure to only RM916.00. This is a 40% discount on the normal all-in fare of RM1,516.00. This combination of flights is fairly easy to obtain throughout the promotional period, assuming you stay clear of the peak periods and public holidays of course.
Example 2: Return Journey to Tokyo, Japan
Taking another example into consideration, a flight that would cost RM769.00 to Tokyo can be obtained for as cheap as RM369.00 (single all in including taxes and fees)(52% discount). Other promotional rates available on busier dates are RM629.00 (18% discount) and RM519.00 (32.5% discount). Return tickets do not carry the same promotional fare as one-way flights do and can cost as low as RM486.00 and as high as RM1,506.00.
Once again, our main concern would be the overall cost (including return ticket) to the consumer, as we assume most people would want to eventually come home from their holiday. We’ve found that it is possible to book a flight to Tokyo for RM369.00, and then obtain a corresponding return ticket for only RM486.00, giving you a total expenditure of RM855.00. This is a 48% discount on the normal all-in fare of RM1,655.00. In the case of this destination, obtaining this promotional all-in fare of RM855.00 shouldn’t be a problem for most people as it is fairly regular (assuming you stay way from peak periods and public holidays). If not, other combinations of flights are also available which still benefit you with a sizeable discount over the normal price.
Why not use the Flight Comparison tool we have on the site and see if AirAsia comes out cheapest for the dates you want to fly. Fares can fluctuate by a huge margin on a daily basis and with proper planning (such as avoiding peak periods), you could end up saving hundreds of ringgit with minimal effort on your part!
