The arrival of Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini marks it as the latest smartphone from Samsung to hit our Malaysian shores. This mini version of one of the biggest smartphones of the year, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has created a buzz among Android fans and is perfect for those who prefer a smaller, easy-to-hold smartphone.

So what are the key features of this smartphone?

Best Postpaid Plans for the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini

The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is available for sale in Malaysia with an official RRP of RM999 (Updated April 2013). As expected, the major networks in Malaysia (with the exception of U Mobile at the moment), are offering discounts off the price of the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, but you may have to be tied in to long term contracts with them to get those discounts.

If you’re the non-commitment type, or are willing to part with a larger sum of money now for longer term savings you can always buy directly from any Samsung authorised dealers and sign up for a contract-free plan. To see what plans are available, see our Cheapest Postpaid plans in Malaysia article. Unlike Apple, Samsung is more flexible on allowing resellers to reduce prices to sell more phones. Because of this, you might actually be able to get the Mini (boxed, sealed and with the full Samsung warranty) for a lower price than the RRP, and with some extra accessories bundled in too.

Cheapest Non-Contract Plans – For those who just want a shiny new phone

For those of you out there who hardly call or SMS but just want a new shiny phone with a data plan, it might be cheaper buying the phone outright from Samsung and sticking with the U Mobile U28 or Maxis Text/TalkMore28 at RM28 / month.

Of course, once you take usage into account, the plans offered by the other big networks start coming into play. For a full comparison, check out our Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini Plans Comparison Tool.

12 Month Contracts

Thinking of getting a lower price for the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini? Most networks usually offer a lower device price for their 12, 18 or 24 month contract plans, but be aware that most of the network have a a hefty fee if you wish to terminate your contract prematurely. Also, take note that most contract plans require an upfront fee. These upfront fees will be rebated back to you of course, but you will still need to fork out more at time of your purchase!

Update April 2013 : Maxis has recently came up with a brand new device price for their Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini plans, which put them on the top spot for the cheapest 12 months contract plan. Check the table below for more plans :

First of all, this plan comes with a bundle consisting of 400 minutes worth of talk time and 200 SMSes. 400mins + 200 SMS actually costs around RM80 month (assuming you were on the Value Plus 50 and you made 50% Maxis to Maxis calls/SMS and 50% Maxis to other networks), but you only have to pay RM48 a month with this plan. This puts it among the top postpaid plans in the market for ‘Average’ users (that is, people who use around 300 minutes and 200 SMS a month). Another perk is that as soon as your bill hits RM110 (credit limit is RM150), calls and SMS to any Maxis number will be charged at only RM0.05 per minute / SMS, which makes it similar to the high commitment plans offered by Maxis.
The drawbacks? The data plans that come along with this bundle are either 1GB or 3GB. As a result, low internet users will not be able to choose the 100MB-500MB packages for this promotion. The addition of the 1GB data plan increases the overall package price to RM96/month.
The TalkMore 48 plan itself is actually comparable to the DiGi Postpaid Plus 48 simply because Maxis’s TalkMore 48 comes with an extra 200 minutes of talktime (DiGi 48 offers 200 mins + 200 SMS per month), even if you take the auto-billing into account.

DiGi have revamped their Smart Plan 88, giving it an extra 300 minutes and 300 SMSes in it’s bundle package. The good news here is that unlike Smart Plan 58, you can call or SMS up to 300 minutes or SMS to absolutely anyone (Maxis, Celcom, U Mobile etc). However, DiGi has unfortunately decreased the data bundle from 8GB (or 5GB pre promotion) to 4GB. Here’s the comparison of the new and old Smart Plan 88 :

Data is of course a very important part of your postpaid plan, especially if you are a smartphone user. So it is worthy to note that the data given in the brand new Smart Plan 58 and 88 is actually split into two parts: Mobile internet quota, for apps other than your normal social network stuff, and Smart Apps quota, for your daily Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, and other social network madness. If you are more of a web surfer and uses youtube and Google more than the social media, try dowloading Opera mobile web browser into your smartphone for unlimited surfing (and open youtube and google via Opera).

Similar in concept to their TalkMore48 plan, Maxis has introduced the TalkMore28 postpaid plan, with the aim of catering to light users. These two plans are very similar, the only difference between the two being the allocation of the minutes and SMSes. This provides users the flexibility to choose the most suitable plan for them according to their usage while enjoying the same rates.
So what are the perks and drawbacks? How does this new plan fair against the other networks?
First of all, the pros: The TalkMore28 Plan comes with 200 Minutes + 100 SMSes. They say you get RM40.50 worth of calls / SMSes (we calculated it to be anywhere between RM36 and RM45 depending on how much you call each network; the RM40.50 assumes that 50% of calls and SMSes are from Maxis to Maxis and the other 50% of calls and SMSes are to other networks), but you only have to pay RM28 / month for this plan. Additionally, if your bill hits RM75, calls and SMSes to any Maxis number will be charged at RM0.06 per minute / per SMS, which makes it similar to the high commitment plans offered by Maxis. Finally to top things off, there does not appear to be a credit limit to enjoy these rates (unlike the RM150 credit limit in the TalkMore48 plan).
The drawbacks? The data packaged along with these plans is 1 GB. As a result light internet users will not be able to choose the 100 MB – 500 MB packages for this promotion. The addition of the 1 GB data plan increases the overall monthly commitment to RM76 / month. But if you feel like you will fully utilise the 1GB and are interested in this deal, do hurry up as there is a risk that Maxis will decide to end it unannounced, which is what happened with the previous Samsung Galaxy S3 promotion. While we can’t find this promotion on their website, a quick call to Maxis did confirm that this promotion is still ongoing.
