Best Postpaid Plans for the Samsung Galaxy S3

As of March 2013, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is available for sale in Malaysia with an official RRP of RM1,699 (was RM2,199 then RM1,999). As expected, the major networks in Malaysia are offering discounts off the price of the Samsung Galaxy S3, but you may have to be tied in to long term contracts with them to get those discounts.

If you’re the non-commitment type, or are willing to part with a larger sum of money now for longer term savings you can always buy directly from any Samsung authorised dealers and sign up for a contract-free plan. To see what plans are available, see our Cheapest Postpaid plans in Malaysia article. Unlike Apple, Samsung is more flexible on allowing resellers to reduce prices to sell more phones. Because of this, you might actually be able to get the S3 (boxed, sealed and with the full Samsung warranty) for a lower price than the RRP, and with some extra accessories bundled in too. As of December 2012 / January 2013  March 2013, prices for buying the Samsung Galaxy S3 outright are in the RM1,499 region.

For the purposes of the analysis below, we will use RM1,499 as a benchmark price for buying the S3 outright, you will not struggle to get the phone for that price (ask for the full Samsung warranty!) at places like Low Yat and Digital Mall, and online at places like ipmartLazada etc. (we don’t endorse any of these shops or sites, and are not responsible for what happens there, they are just mentioned to give our readers an idea of the prices you can get).

Cheapest Non-Contract

For people who hardly call or SMS but just want a new shiny phone with a data plan, it might be cheaper buying the phone outright from Samsung (at RM1,499 / RM1,699) and power up your phone with the cheapest postpaid plan. In this case, we found that  the U Mobile U28 or Maxis Text/TalkMore28 – both at RM28 per month – are the two cheapest plans in the market.

Check out the table below for more postpaid plans (we are assumiing that you can get the Samsung Galaxy S3 at RM1,499) :

Go To U Mobile
U Mobile is the 4th network to join the Samsung Galaxy S3 game, but despite being the latecomer, they emerged as the top plan for those who want a postpaid plan to power up their Samsung Galaxy S3.
If you have a good U Mobile signal where you live, work and play, then for RM28 per month you can get 1GB of data with 300 SMSes (200 to any network and 100 to your fellow U Mobile users) included. Not too shabby, although perhaps their prepaid UMI28 offering might be more attractive if you do want to make calls and surf a little less. For UMI28 prepaid plan (at RM28 also), you can get 100 mins of calls to any network, 30 SMSes to any network and 500MB of data.

Maxis TalkMore28 and TextMore28 Postpaid Plan – Get 200 Mins + 100 SMS (or 100 mins + 200 SMS) bundle “worth RM40″ for only RM28 / month – Top deal for light users
Drawbacks : Bundle does not include any 3G Internet data, RM40 is actually RM40.50 with an assumption that 50% of calls and SMS are made from Maxis to Maxis and 50% of calls and SMS are made from Maxis to other networks

Device Price: RM1,499
Monthly Commitment Fee: RM28/month
12 month Cost of Ownership: RM1,835
Call Rate: RM0.12/min for Maxis to Maxis, RM0.15/min for Maxis to  other networks
SMS Rate: RM0.12/SMS for Maxis to Maxis, RM0.15/SMS for Maxis to  other networks
Quota:
200 Mins + 100 SMS for TalkMore 28
100 Mins + 200 SMS for TextMore 28
Go To Maxis
Similar in concept to their TalkMore48 plan, Maxis has introduced the TalkMore28 and TextMore28 postpaid plans, with the aim of catering towards light users. These two plans are basically similar, with the only thing differing the two being the allocation of the Minutes and SMSes. This provides users the flexibility to choose the most suitable plan for them according to their usage while enjoying the same rates.
So what are the perks and drawbacks? How does this new plan fair against the other networks?
First of all, the pros: The Talk More28 Plan comes with 200Minutes + 100 SMS while conversely, the TextMore28 comes with 100 Minutes + 200 SMS. They say you get RM40.50 worth of calls/SMSes (we calculated it to be anywhere between RM36 and RM45 depending on how much of each network you call), the RM40.50 assumes that 50% of calls and SMSes are made from Maxis to Maxis and 50% of calls and SMSes are made from Maxis to other networks, but you only have to pay RM28/month for this plan. This puts the plan among the top plans in the market for light users (assuming a usage of around 50 Minutes and 50 SMSes per month). Additionally, if your bill hits RM75, calls and SMSes to any Maxis number will be charged at RM0.06 per minute / SMS, which makes it similar to the high commitment plans offered by Maxis. Finally to top things off, there does not appear to be a credit limit to enjoy these rates (unlike the RM150 credit limit of the TalkMore48 plan).
The drawbacks? These plans don’t come with Mobile Internet, you either have to live with surfing on WiFi or have to bolt a data plan on seperately at between RM18-68 for 100MB-3GB of data. For example, bolting on a 500MB data package at RM38/month will increase the cost of the TalkMore 28 + Data to RM66 / month. Also, be aware that the rates of RM0.06 per minute after surpassing RM75 per month only apply to Maxis numbers only and not to the other networks.

Obviously once you take usage into account, the plans offered by the other big networks start coming into play. For a full comparison, check out The SaveMoney.my Samsung Galaxy S3 Plan comparison tool.

12-Month Contracts

For most average users (defined below) Maxis or Celcom would start coming into play. The Maxis and Celcom plans between the don’t differ much in total cost of ownership of the phone over 12 months, with Celcom only slightly edging Maxis some of the time, depending on whether you are a low, average or heavy user.

If you use up to 300 minutes, 200 SMSes, and around 1GB internet data, then you ought to consider getting your Samsung Galaxy S3 with the Celcom 12-month contract. At time of writing (April 2013), Celcom gives the cheapest 12-month contract plan for the Samsung Galaxy S3 with its First Premier + Mobile Internet Basic 1GB. The First Premier plan is actually RM80 per month and comes with 100MB of internet data. However, the Samsung Galaxy S3 bundle requires you to also subscribe to the basic data plan for RM48 per month, which resulted in RM118 total monthly plan cost!
When comparing between plans, Celcom First Prime is actually cheaper than Celcom First Premier when it comes to the monthly commitment data. But when you add in the phone price, call and SMS rates into the calculation, Celcom Premier actually emerges as the total cheapest plans for the 12 months contract.
Update 18th June 2013 : Celcom is no longer offering bundle plans for Samsung Galaxy S3!

Go To Maxis
The next plan that gives the overall cheapest 12-months usage is the Maxis TalkMore 48 + 1GB internet data. The good thing about this plan is that you’re not obliged to a contract, but that would mean purchasing the phone price at RRP from Maxis at RM1,699 (or possibly RM1,499 at other places, if you can get that price) and sticking this plan into your brand new Samsung Galaxy S3. The total cost for the whole 12 months would be RM2,851, which is not too far from Celcom. So what do you need to know about this plan?
First of all, this plan comes with a bundle consisting of 400 minutes worth of talk time and 200 SMSes. 400mins + 200 SMS actually costs around RM80 month (assuming you were on the Value Plus 50 and you made 50% Maxis to Maxis calls/SMS and 50% Maxis to other networks), but you only have to pay RM48 a month with this plan. This puts it among the top postpaid plans in the market for ‘Average’ users (that is, people who use around 300 minutes and 200 SMS a month). Another perk is that as soon as your bill hits RM110 (credit limit is RM150), calls and SMS to any Maxis number will be charged at only RM0.05 per minute / SMS, which makes it similar to the high commitment plans offered by Maxis.
The drawbacks? The data plans that come along with this bundle are either 1GB or 3GB. As a result, low internet users will not be able to choose the 100MB-500MB packages for this promotion. The addition of the 1GB data plan increases the overall package price to RM96/month.
The TalkMore 48 plan itself is actually comparable to the DiGi Postpaid Plus 48 simply because Maxis’s TalkMore 48 comes with an extra 200 minutes of talktime (DiGi 48 offers 200 mins + 200 SMS per month), even if you take the auto-billing into account.

Celcom have recently introduced their new range of postpaid plans, changing the landscape slightly. Their previous plans were at RM88 / month (Exec 50 + Basic), now they have reduced to RM78 / month (First Prime 40 + Basic). While the flat rate pricing is handy, the new rates actually increases costs for average users, especially without the Celcom Usage discount on the now expired Exec 50, making this plan only better than DiGi’s and Maxis’ basic offering sometimes.

The next plan that gives the overall cheapest 18-months usage is the Maxis TalkMore 48 + 1GB internet data. The good thing about this plan is that you’re not obliged to a contract, but that would mean purchasing the phone price at RRP from Maxis at RM1,699 (or possibly RM1,499 at other places, if you can get that price) and sticking this plan into your brand new Samsung Galaxy S3. The total cost for the whole 18 months would be RM3,427, which is not too far from Celcom.

24-Month Contracts

U Mobile and Digi comes into play here, offering competitive rates on their 24-month contract. DiGi comes out on top for cheapest cost of ownership across most users, if you want to consider the ‘big 3′ players only, as a rule of thumb If you use less than 250 minutes and 150 SMS go for Digi, otherwise Maxis or Celcom. FYI, even in the 24-month contract range, it might be cheaper if you go for Celcoms 12-18 month contracts and compare it over 24 months, depending on your usage of course.

For an average user (again 300 mins, 200 SMS, 1GB of data), see how the plans compare:

U Mobile’s U88 and U58 plans come very close in terms of overall cost comparison with the U88 plan just being RM56 cheaper over the span of 24-months. As an average user, the total monthly cost for each of the plans is very close. However, with an extra 1GB of data offered by the U88, you have more free data at your disposal compared to the U58. On a side note, we dislike the up front cost of RM528 even if it is rebated over the cost of the contract.

Featured Samsung Galaxy 24-Month Plan : U Mobile U Premium – Phone for RM588

U Mobile is the 4th network to join the Samsung Galaxy S3 game, but despite coming late, they have the lowest phone cost offer at RM588, even if you have to stump up a large amount of RM168 / month for the U Premium contract.
For heavy users this plan comes out on top, especially if you have many people that you call on U Mobile. If you aren’t too fussed about the ‘cheapest phone cost’ aspect, the other U Mobile plans will beat this one over the 24-month period, do check our Samsung Galaxy S3 tool to find out of course. This is even more important as you may have to pay a hefty upfront cost (even if its rebatable, you still have to fork out a large amount, negating the ‘low phone cost aspect’)
