What is the BlackBerry Z10?

The BlackBerry Z10 is the latest phone to come out of the BlackBerry factory, and the release of this gadget marks the reinvention of the phone company. Why? The BlackBerry Z10's Android-like physical appearance is a far cry from its older BlackBerry Bold, Torch and Curve companions. This phone also denotes the end of the QWERTY keypad and runs on the all-new Blackberry 10 mobile computing platform. In the Z10, the QWERTY keypad has been replaced with a sleek new touchscreen feature. Aside from the major physical changes, this new gadget now features:

BlackBerry Z10 Key Features

  • 16GB internal storage
  • 4.2'' Touch Display
  • 8MP Rear Camera
  • 3G Ready
  • 1280 x 768 resolution, 356ppi
  • Blackberry 10 Operating System
  • 1080 HD Video Recording

Best Postpaid Plans for the BlackBerry Z10

In Malaysia, the BlackBerry Z10 is available for sale with an official RRP of RM2,188. As expected, the major networks like Maxis, DiGi, Celcom, and U Mobile are offering discounts off the retail price of the BlackBerry Z10, but you may have to be tied to long-term contracts of 12 or 24 months with them to get those discounts.

If you’re the non-committal type, or are willing to part with a larger sum of money now for longer-term savings, you can always buy the Z10 directly from any BlackBerry authorised dealers and sign up for a contract-free plan. To see what plans are available, see our Cheapest Postpaid plans in Malaysia article.

Cheapest Non-Contract Plans – For those who just want a shiny new phone

For those of you out there who hardly call or SMS but just want a new shiny phone with a data plan, it might be cheaper to buy the phone outright and then power it up with the cheapest postpaid plan available in the market. Lucky for you, this brand-new BlackBerry Z10 does not require a BIS plan to start surfing the net, unlike previous models of Blackberries. Instead, any postpaid plan with available data will do the trick.

At time of writing (April 2013), the cheapest plan that works with the BlackBerry Z10 is definitely U Mobile's U28 plan. Not surprising, considering that U28 has been the leading cheapest plan for quite some time now! For RM28 a month, you get to enjoy 1 GB of data plus 200 SMSes which enables you to send 100 SMSes to any network and the other 100 SMSes to U Mobile numbers. Go To U Mobile
Maxis may have been the first-ever network in Malaysia to have added the brand-new BlackBerry Z10 to their list of phones, but U Mobile emerged at the top when it comes to the cheapest plan for the device. If you already have the BlackBerry Z10 in hand or are planning to get one "a-la-carte" without any plan bundling, then U28 might be the plan for you. However, this plan is suitable only for those who hardly call or SMS (up to 200 calls and 200 SMSes).
If you have a good U Mobile signal where you live, work, and play, then for RM28 per month you can get 1 GB of data with 300 SMSes (200 to any network and 100 to your fellow U Mobile users) included. Not too shabby, although perhaps their prepaid UMI28 offering might be more attractive if you do want to make calls and surf a little less. For the UMI28 prepaid plan (also at RM28), you can get 100 mins of calls to any network, 30 SMSes to any network and 500MB of data.

Featured BlackBerry Z10 Plan - Maxis SurfMore50
Drawbacks: No calls or minutes allocated in this plan.

BlackBerry Z10 Cost: RM2,188 (RRP)
Monthly Commitment Fee:
 RM50 / month
Data Quota: 2GB (Included in plan)
Call Rate: RM0.12 / min for Maxis to Maxis, RM0.20 / min for Maxis to other networks
SMS Rate: RM0.05 / SMS for Maxis to Maxis, RM0.15 / SMS for Maxis to other networks
Minimum Contract Length: NO Contract
Deposit Fee: None
Termination Fee: None
Usage Benefits:
- When usage reaches RM150, you get a 25% discount on monthly commitment (monthly fee becomes RM37.50).
- When usage reaches RM250, you get a 100% discount on monthly commitment (no monthly fee).
Go To Maxis
Maxis has taken the initiative to introduce a data-focused plan into the market - the SurfMore50, with the aim of catering to data-dependent users, as opposed to those who call and SMS more. This plan is actually a tweaked up version of the Internet Value Plan 50 which had a 1.5 GB quota allocation at the same cost of RM50 / month. In addition to that, the rates for same-network calls and SMSes are cheaper than the standard rates offered by Maxis.
For those heavy users out there, if your usage reaches RM150, you get to enjoy a 25% discount on your monthly data commitment fee. This means that if you used RM150, you would only have to pay RM187.50 instead of RM200. If you’re a phone addict and your usage reaches RM250, you get to enjoy a 100% discount off your monthly commitment fee. This essentially means that if you used RM250, you would incur no monthly commitment fee (and just pay for your usage)!
The drawbacks? While exceeding your quota will not mean a throttling in speed, it will incur a charge of RM0.30 / MB (very expensive). As such if you do indeed exceed your quota, consider purchasing upgrade passes for extra data instead. This plan is most suitable for those who are primarily data-dependent, and is not the most appropriate for an average user (assumed usage of 300 minutes, 200 SMSes and 1 GB of Data).

12-Month Contract Plans

If you are a light user, and don’t mind going on a long-term contract in exchange for a cheaper upfront cost for the phone, Maxis' BBMore55 is probably the one to go for as it offers the lowest monthly commitment among all the other plans. For most average users (defined below) however, the Maxis BBMore88 takes a significant lead over the other existing plans. Check out the table below for more plans :

Go To Maxis
BlackBerry recently launched its latest gadget to hit the smartphone market, and that's the BlackBerry Z10! Unlike its predecessor, this BlackBerry comes with an on-screen keyboard. Yep, the beloved QWERTY keypad is gone, folks. A quick call to Maxis also confirms that this brand new BlackBerry Z10 does not requires a BIS plan to surf the web ("normal" internet data would do), and you can now use WhatsApp Messenger with this device. Aside from these very obvious changes, this device also comes equipped with a 4.2'' touch display, a 8.0 MP camera, and a 1080p HD Camera. For more information, just head on to BlackBerry's main website here.
There are three types of plans for you to choose from, and they are the BBMore 55, BBMore88, and BBMore148. The 24-month contract is only available for BBMore88 and BBMore148. With Maxis, you can get the device at a subsidized price initially, but it might cost you way more in the long run. For more thorough information, just check our calculations of the total cost above!
We generally don't like the high advance payment required by Maxis, but good news for Maxis One Club members, and those who have been a Maxis subscriber for more than one year, because Maxis will waive your advance payment.

Go To Celcom
If you use up to 300 minutes, 200 SMSes, and around 1 GB of data a month, then you ought to consider getting your BlackBerry Z10 with a Celcom 12-month contract. At time of writing (April 2013), Celcom gives the cheapest 12-month contract plan with its First Premier + Mobile Internet Basic 1GB. The First Premier plan is actually RM80 per month and comes with 100MB of internet data. However, the BlackBerry Z10 bundle requires you to also subscribe to the basic data plan for RM48 per month, which resulted in a RM118 total monthly plan cost!
When comparing both plans, Celcom First Prime is actually cheaper than Celcom First Premier when it comes to the monthly commitment data fee. But when you add in the phone price, and call and SMS rates into the calculation, Celcom Premier actually emerges as the overall cheapest plan for a 12-month contract.

24 Month Contract Plan

Generally, people subscribe to a long 24-month contract period because they usually get a much cheaper price for the device in return. However, before you say "yes" to the mobile network, take a note that you will have to use the phone and the plan for the full 2-year period (there is usually a fee if you wish to terminate the contract earlier)!

Again, we measured up all the available contract and non-contract plans in Malaysia to find the cheapest 24-month plan for average users (300 Minutes, 200 SMSes, 1 GB Data). And here are the results :

If you're an average user and looking for a cheaper BlackBerry Z10, then look no further than DiGi's Smart Plan 88. The current market price for the BlackBerry Z10 is RM2,188 but DiGi allows you to get one at a mere RM1,409. The catch is that you have to sign up for a long 24-month contract to get this price, which means that you have to use the BlackBerry Z10 and pay a minimum of RM88 per month for the whole 2 years. There's also the RM568 upfront payment (RM480 advance device payment and RM88 advance payment for the plan), which means that you still have to fork out RM1,977 for the initial payment!
The DG Smart Plan 88 gives you 300 minutes, 300 SMSes, and 4 GB of data, which should be quite enough for an average phone user.
It is worth noting that the data given in the brand-new Smart Plan 58 and 88 is actually split into two parts: Mobile internet quota, for apps other than your normal social network stuff, and Smart Apps quota, for your daily Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, and other social network madness. If you are more of a web surfer and use Youtube and Google more than social media, try downloading the Opera mobile web browser into your smartphone for unlimited surfing (and open Youtube / Google via Opera).
