Planning to get your hands on the brand-new Samsung Galaxy S4 (non-LTE)? We've got the best 12, 18 and 24-month plans for you, so keep on reading to find out more!

What is the Samsung Galaxy S4 (non-LTE version)?

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is the latest smartphone from Samsung, and it has been the talk of the town even since before its launching date up till now! Samsung unveiled this long-awaited smartphone on the 14th of March 2013 in New York (i.e. early 15th of March, Malaysian time), but Malaysians could only get a hold of the phone from the 27th of April 2013 from major networks like Maxis, DiGi, U Mobile, and Celcom. Furthermore, there are two models coming to Malaysia, with the non-LTE version out in April and the LTE version out in early June 2013.

Samsung Galaxy S4 comes with these key features :

  • 136.6mm tall x 68.9mm wide x 7.9mm thick
  • powered by an Exynos 5 1.6GhHz eight-core processor or the quad-core 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor (first one is for the non-LTE version and second is for the LTE version) paired with 2GB of RAM
  • 5-inch full HD AMOLED Screen
  • 13MP camera with LED Flash
  • 2MP Front-facing camera
  • Dual Shot option - both cameras can be activated at the same time
  • Runs on Android 4.2.2
  • Available in two colours - Black Mist and White Forest

Best Postpaid Plans for the Samsung Galaxy S4

In Malaysia, the Samsung Galaxy S4 (non-LTE) is available for sale with an official RRP of RM2,199, with the LTE version coming in at RM2,499. For this guide, we will focus on the non-LTE version, as at the time of writing in early June, only Maxis have launched the LTE version plans.

As expected, the major networks (Maxis, DiGi, Celcom, and U Mobile) are offering discounts off the retail price for the Samsung Galaxy S4, but you may have to be tied to long-term contracts of 12,18 or 24 months with them to get those discounts.

If you’re the non-committal type, or are willing to part with a larger sum of money now for longer-term savings, you can always buy the smartphone directly from any Samsung-authorised dealers and sign up for a contract-free plan. To see what plans are available, see our Cheapest Postpaid plans in Malaysia article.

Cheapest 12-Month Contract Plans

If you are a light user, and don’t mind going on a long-term contract in exchange for a cheaper upfront cost for the phone, Maxis’ SurfMore50 is probably the one to go for as it offers the lowest monthly commitment amongst all the plans. For those who are interested in purchasing this plan, we suggest that you do so online, because Maxis is offering an additional RM120 rebate.

For most average users (defined below) however, the Maxis TalkMore48 + 3GB data takes a significant lead over the other existing plans. Check out the table below for more plans:

DiGi might have been the first network to release the coveted Samsung Galaxy S4 bundle plans, but Maxis has beaten DiGi in the cheapest plan arena. If you are looking for a cheaper Samsung Galaxy S4 plan and don't mind being tied to a 12-month-long contract, then Maxis' TalkMore 48 + 1GB 12-month bundle plan should be taken into your consideration.
For starters, this plan allows you to grab the Samsung Galaxy S4 for RM1,849. Along with the device, the plan also gives you 400 minutes, 200 SMSes, and 1 GB data. This quota will be allocated to you monthly, which should be enough for average users out there. The downside is that there will be an advance payment (as usual). Good news for those who are thinking of getting this plan! Maxis is offering an additional RM120 rebate (RM10 rebate per month for 12 months) if you purchase this bundle via their online store.
If compared to Celcom, Maxis actually offers a cheaper monthly commitment fee, while the former plan offers a cheaper device price.

Thinking of getting the Samsung Galaxy S4? Celcom is offering quite a deal for their First Premier + Mobile Internet Basic 12-month and 18-month contract plans. First, let's review their 12-month contract plan, shall we?
First up, the Celcom First Premier plan must be bundled up with a data plan - the Mobile Internet Basic 1 GB or the Mobile Internet Advance 3 GB. For this review, we assume that an average user would need around 1 GB data (which should be more than enough to surf the web and get on social media). The cost for the 1 GB data? RM38, which brings your minimum monthly cost to RM118 (the plan + data bundle). With this bundle, you can get the smartphone at RM1,788 for the 12-month contract. The total cost that you can anticipate for the whole 12 months would be (RM118 x 12) + RM1,788 = RM3,204.
For those who want to grab the device at an even cheaper price (but you'll be tied to a longer contract period), Celcom's First Premier + Mobile Internet Basic 18-month contract plan allows you to grab the Samsung Galaxy S4 for RM1,738. There is only RM50 difference between these two plans though.
In comparison to Maxis, Celcom gives you a cheaper monthly commitment fee while Maxis offers the device at a slightly cheaper price.

Cheapest 18-Month Contract Plans

At time of writing (April 2013), Celcom remains the only plan to offer an 18-month contract plan. However, we discovered that Maxis's TalkMore 48 + 3GB contract plan actually gives you the cheapest overall cost for 18 months. For those who don't mind purchasing their Samsung Galaxy S4 bundle online (the device should reach you in maximum two weeks' time), Maxis is offering a rebate of RM120 exclusively for online purchases. This rebate actually reduces the total cost of 12 months, as you can see from the table below :

For those of you who are looking for a cheaper Samsung Galaxy S4 plan and don't mind being tied to a 18-month-long contract, then Maxis' TalkMore 48 + 3 GB 18-month bundle plan should be taken into your consideration.
For starters, this plan allows you to grab the Samsung Galaxy S4 for RM1,699. Along with the device, the plan also gives you 400 minutes, 200 SMSes, and 3 GB data (your monthly fee will be RM116). This bundle will be allocated to you monthly, which should be enough for average users out there. The downside is that there will be an advance payment (as usual).
Remember the quote, "good things come to those who wait"? Well, fif you choose to purchase online via the Maxis online store, you will get an additional rebate of RM120 (RM10 per month for 12 months), which definitely lowers your total cost for the whole 12 months (see the cheaper total 12 months cost for TalkMore 48 + 1GB and TalkMore + 3GB plans above - only available via online store though). But the delivery takes about two weeks to reach you, so you have to wait patiently before you can hold the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Although Maxis comes out on top for the cheapest total cost over 18 months, Celcom's 18-month contract plan is still worth considering (especially for those who don't quite fancy Maxis).
First up, the Celcom First Prime must be bundled up with a data plan - the Mobile Internet Basic 1 GB or the Mobile Internet Advance 3 GB. For this review, we assume that an average user would need around 1 GB data (which should be more than enough to surf the web and get on social media). The cost for the 1 GB data? RM38, which brings your minimum monthly cost to RM78 (the plan + data bundle). However, for usages of around 300 minutes and up to 200 SMSes, you can anticipate your monthly cost to be around RM113.00 instead.
With this bundle, you can get the smartphone at RM1,788 for the 18-month contract, which leads the total cost for the whole 18 months to be (RM113 x 18) + RM1,788 = RM3,822.

With these new DG Smart Plans, DiGi are offering a monthly quota with minutes, SMS and data along with the device (check out the list above to see the bundles offered!). For those who wants to get this device and don't mind being tied up to a long 24-month contract, the DG Smart Plan 88 should be in your list of plans to consider, strictly because it is the top plan for the 24-month contract.

U Mobile's U88 (and U58) are the top plans for those who are looking for a cheaper device price and don't mind being tied to a contract for 24 months. The two-year contract could spell eternity for some subscribers, but if you are confident that you will use the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone for two whole years without any desire to change / upgrade it for some other gadget in the future (Samsung Galaxy 5, 6, 7, etc), then you might want to consider these two plans.
Let's take a closer look at U Mobile's U88 plan, shall we? Basically, this network is offering the Samsung Galaxy S4 for only RM1,388 with their U88 plan. The minimum monthly fee that you have to pay is RM88, but for usage of 300 minutes and 200 SMSes (aka average usage), you can anticipate your monthly phone bill to be around RM108.00. If we calculate the total cost for the whole 24 months, your expenditure would be around RM3,980, which makes it currently the cheapest 24-month contract plan in the market. But hold on! There's is an advance payment of RM528 that you have to pay in order to get the device. We did not put that amount into calculation because all of it will be rebated back to you in a couple of months, but this still means that you will initially have to fork out more.
For those who don't quite like U Mobile for whatever reason, Maxis's TalkMore 48 + 1GB (online store) actually gives you a cheaper total cost for the whole 24 months, thanks to the Maxis Online Store's RM120 rebate.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 fever is officially infecting Malaysians for sure! Previously, DiGi had revealed their Samsung Galaxy S4 plans, but this time the spotlight is on U Mobile and their Samsung Galaxy S4 Plans. As you can see from the list above, the Samsung Galaxy S4 could be yours from RM899 (the cheapest device price for U Mobile), but you will be tied to a 24-month-long contract with a slightly more expensive monthly fee of RM168 per month.
Worht noting - other networks like Celcom and Maxis will be revealing their plans on the 27th of April (and we will update our article accordingly!). If the rumours are true, Maxis will be offering the device at RM1,499 with a RM118 per month commitment plan. Meanwhile, Celcom will give you the device from as low as RM1,338 with their Celcom First Plans.
Once we have information on all the plans available for this coveted device, we will immediately start comparing all of them and update you on which plan is the best for your usage, so stay tuned to our Samsung Galaxy S4 guide!

Samsung Galaxy S4 Price in Malaysia

Update 20th April 2013: The Samsung Galaxy S4 will retail at RM2,199 (for the Exynos 5 model), similar to what we predicted last month.

Previous Updates:

No word yet, but judging by previous releases, the prices in other countries look to be similar to the prices of the  Samsung Galaxy S3 when it launched in 2012, so we can expect the RRP in Malaysia to be something like RM2,199 with most of the networks (DiGi, Maxis, Celcom, U Mobile etc.) offering similar levels of discounts for their contract plans.

If you’re convinced by that argument, why not have a look at our Best Samsung Galaxy S3 article to see roughly how much you might need to fork out when it does launch here in the coming month(s). Why not also check out our Samsung Galaxy S3 Plan Comparison tool to see how we do analysis on device plan long term contracts and promotions. We'll keep you posted on the RRP, as well as the subsidized prices for contract plans from networks in Malaysia!

I can’t wait for the Malaysian release date, how do I get a Samsung Galaxy S4 now?

Well we would probably say you could pick it up some time next month from one of the first batch of countries, and we’re pretty sure some ‘grey’ market models (i.e. bought overseas and sold here for an unsavoury amount of money!) will be available in places like Low Yat, Queensbay and Digital Mall if Malaysia is not within the first batch of countries to pick up the device. Having said that, Samsung does see Malaysia as a somewhat key market (compared to Apple) and may launch the device quicker than you might think, i.e. the same time as everybody else! Alternatively, you could sign up below for the latest updates, we at SaveMoney.my might just be doing something exciting in the coming days / weeks!
